Caffè San Marco

Caffè San Marco is Trieste’s preeminent literary café—established in 1914 with original Viennese Secession interiors, marble tables, and stuccos by Vito Timmel. It became a nexus for intellectuals, irredentists, Jewish students, and writers like Svevo, Joyce, Saba, and Magris. After wartime destruction and rebirth, today it is part café, bookstore, and cultural forum, retaining its bohemian intellectual pulse. Rich espressos, Austrian-inspired snacks, debate, letters, chess masters—all resonate within its storied walls.

Pasticceria La Bomboniera

Established in 1836 and preserved in its original Viennese-style décor, La Bomboniera is one of Trieste’s most treasured pastry shops. Nestled in a pedestrian square, it maintains its wood-fired oven and century-old recipes—Rigo Jancsi, Dobos torte, Linzer, putizza, presnitz—specialties of the Austro-Hungarian tradition. Today led by the Faggiotto family, master chocolatiers, the shop continues offering exquisite, meticulously crafted pastries in an atmosphere that feels suspended in time.

Azienda Agricola Zidarich

Zidarich is a revered family-owned winery perched on the limestone hills of the Carso, just above Trieste. Founded in 1988 by Benjamin Zidarich, it is renowned for natural, biodynamic wines—no added sulfur, fermented by moon phase, and crafted in a cellar carved deep into the rock. Specializing in local varietals like Vitovska, Malvasia, Terrano, and expressive blends such as Prulke (Sauvignon–Vitovska–Malvasia), Zidarich’s wines are crystalline, mineral-driven, and steeped in Carso’s rugged terroir. The tasting experience—held in an underground vault with vineyard and sea views—is intimate, elemental, and transformative.

Osteria Enoteca da Michele

Osteria Enoteca da Michele is a soulful neighborhood gem where the wine list takes center stage. This cozy osteria in central Udine offers an extraordinary range of Friulian and Italian labels, with knowledgeable staff eager to recommend new favorites. The food is rustic and seasonal—cured meats, gnocchi, cheeses, and slow-cooked meats—crafted to complement the wines and served in a relaxed, welcoming space with vintage details and wooden beams. It’s the kind of place where the line between guest and regular quickly disappears.

La Timballo

La Timballo (also known as Gelateria Fiordilatte) is Udine’s crown jewel of artisanal gelato, continuously crafting small-batch excellence since 1985. Founded by Giancarlo Timballo, a visionary and organizer of the Gelato World Championships, the shop blends traditional fiordilatte techniques with gourmet innovation—remarkably reducing sweetness and highlighting pure flavors. Each flavor is made from scratch daily using top-tier ingredients, often inspired by culinary creativity and seasonal produce. The result is a silky, deep, and ultra-refined gelato experience that feels more like haute cuisine than street fare.

Antica Maddalena

Antica Maddalena is a stalwart of Udine’s dining scene—an atmospheric osteria where simplicity and sincerity shine. Dishes like glazed duck breast, seasonal polenta, rustic stews, and hearty pastas feature prominently, earned by generations of patrons. Interiors nod to tradition with wood accents and soft lighting, making it an ideal stop for classic Friulian cooking in a welcoming setting.

Osteria al Cappello

Osteria al Cappello is a historic inn in Udine’s Paolo Sarpi district, family-run by Monica Toniut and rooted in Friulian tradition. It combines charming lodge-style décor with a menu focusing on local produce: homemade pastas, cellarside meats, regional cheeses—all meant to be paired with the exceptional wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Occasional evenings hosted alongside local vintners reinforce its role as a cultural and culinary gathering spot.

Osteria della Subida

Osteria della Subida offers a more relaxed counterpart to the resort’s starred trattoria. Housed in a rustic tavern space, it serves approachable Friulian fare—fresh pastas, rustic soups, seasonal risottos—in a festive communal setting. With local wines flowing and open doors to the resort garden, its atmosphere is one of genuine warmth and shared pleasure.

Trattoria al Cacciatore

Trattoria al Cacciatore is the heart of La Subida’s culinary spirit—a Michelin-starred restaurant housed in the original agriturismo building and helmed by Chef Alessandro Gavagna. Here, humble Collio ingredients gain elevated expression through thoughtful preparation, grounded in Slovenian‑Friulian tradition. The menu features dishes like game ragù, foraged wild herbs, seasonal fritto misto, and carnal paprika-infused meats, all paired with wines drawn from the family cellar. It’s a place of convivial hospitality and quietly refined flavors, where the Sirk family remains gracious hosts.

La Subida Country Resort

La Subida Country Resort is a charming, eco-conscious hamlet nestled among woodlands and vineyards in the Collio hills—part rustic retreat, part luxury hideaway. Originally founded as an agriturismo in the 1980s, it has evolved under the Sirk family into a multifaceted estate featuring 18 distinctive lodgings, a rejuvenating woodland pool, horse-riding trails, and two acclaimed restaurants: the Michelin-starred Trattoria al Cacciatore and the more relaxed Osteria della Subida. It’s an immersive celebration of nature, terroir, and slow-living—where every experience, from cooking classes to riding at sunset, feels intentionally poetic and deeply authentic.
