The story began in 1936, when Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. fell in love with Torcello during a boat excursion and purchased a small wine shop. After the war it evolved into the Locanda, officially opening in 1947 and becoming a secluded retreat for writers, artists, royalty, and travelers searching for privacy. Ernest Hemingway famously found sanctuary here, as did Queen Elizabeth and generations of distinguished guests.
Today, the intimate 10-room Locanda remains surrounded by gardens and the ancient monuments of Torcello. At its restaurant, classic Cipriani dishes meet seasonal lagoon seafood, produce from local gardens, and traditional desserts.
