Il Convento di Santa Maria di Constantinopoli

Global treasures and Puglian warmth in a 15th-century monastery

Once a Franciscan monastery, this artistic haven near Santa Maria di Leuca offers guests rare antiques, heartfelt hospitality, and a rooftop garden kissed by sunset.

Il Convento is a captivating 15th-century Franciscan monastery, situated on the outskirts of Marittima, near Santa Maria di Leuca. Once used for storage by the owners, this extraordinary property has been lovingly restored and transformed into a unique home filled with treasures from around the globe. The owner, Athena McAlpine, has curated an impressive collection of rare artifacts and art, including tribal pieces, Moroccan carpets, Indian ceramics, and Nigerian carvings, which adorn every corner of the guesthouse. Each guest room is individually decorated, creating a distinct and intimate atmosphere.

An extensive collection of books, weighing a remarkable 14 tons, is scattered throughout the property, offering guests a chance to explore a literary treasure trove at every turn. Il Convento stands out as one of the most unique boutique hotels in Puglia, exuding warmth and charm. Athena opens her home with exceptional hospitality, treating guests like old friends. The service is personal and attentive, ensuring that every need is met.

Chef Pierluigi brings the flavors of Puglia to life, preparing meals using the freshest local produce and home-baked goods. Guests are invited to help themselves throughout the day, and when Pierluigi heads out to shop for dinner, it’s the perfect time to wander into the kitchen for a Negroni or explore the lush grounds. One of the highlights is the rooftop cactus garden, where the sunset views are nothing short of spectacular.

A stay at Il Convento is a relaxed, informal experience, offering a true sense of escape in an unforgettable setting. The peaceful ambiance and attention to detail make it a place that is hard to leave, providing an oasis of calm and a home away from home in the heart of Puglia.
